The AAM’s exhibition Zombies: Pay Attention! looks at the space between the living and the dead, examining the notion of the “living dead” or “undead” within contemporary culture. From writer-director George Romero’s cult-classic film Night Of The Living Dead (1968) to the popularity of contemporary television shows The Walking Dead and Jericho, and video games Fallout and Resident Evil, the figure of the zombie is ever present. Suspended in an ambiguous state between life and death, alive but not living, the figure of the zombie continues to be used by filmmakers, writers, and artists as a metaphor for fear, anxiety, and crisis. The AAM’s exhibition presents a global constellation of work that reflects on contemporary life, what it means to be living, and the potentially catastrophic effects of existing in the liminal space of the “undead.”
