Iza Tarasewicz “The Strange Attractors”

21.02 – 03.04.2014

Kurator: Lorenzo Sandoval

Polnisches Institut Berlin

Iza Tarasewicz set off from Northeastern Poland, traveled through remote countries like Brazil, the Georgian Republic, and the United States, to finally arrive in Berlin as a fellow of the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation for a one-year residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. Tarasewicz wishes to reflect the open character of the city, and develops her most recent project in cooperation with Lorenzo Sandoval, a Spanish curator living in Berlin, and Louis Armand, an Australian poet and critic residing in Prague. The artist took inspiration from Armand‘s metaphysical poetry for her exhibition “The Strange Attractors” and created a unique arrangement of objects and sculptures made of linen, fibers, ash, and steel.

“The Strange Attractors form a basic definition in chaos theory. I wanted to approach it cunningly and decided to construct objects within a specific technical and material context. This way I transmitted abstract, untamed shapes and illusory diagrams into public space. Even though the works do displace the human subject, their arrangement and parameters are adjusted to the viewer. I wish to create a space that is able to accumulate energy and mass: a space that simultaneously expresses the instability and impermanence of these appearances, and reveals the fact that the relationship between subject and object is determined by chaos theory.” Iza Tarasewicz

Iza Tarasewicz is a fellow of the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation – International Residency Program at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien 2013/2014. Last year she was nominated for the prestigious Polish award “Paszport Polityki”.

Born in Sydney, he has lived and worked in Prague since 1994. www.louis-armand.com
