We have just published the fifth issue of Contemporary Lynx Magazine in print. We are looking to raise £3,500. One of the most challenging tasks in running an indie magazine is the cost and logistics of a worldwide distribution. We want to give a voice to Polish artists and build a platform for experts to report on them. Reaching out to new readers from across the globe is the most exciting part of publishing a print magazine. However, the cost of shipping, logistics and transportation sometimes threaten to overwhelm our budget, and restrict us from crossing the oceans and going further. Your help is vital in making this happen!
We offer: unique curated content / cutting edge commentary / quality print / fresh thinking / each cover is a unique artwork painted acrylic on PVC/ Illustrations made by acclaimed artists
WHY IS THE FIFTH ISSUE OF CONTEMPORARY LYNX SO SPECIAL?
- Each issue has a unique hand-painted cover by Zbiok (check out the video of how he did it)!
- Fascinating interviews with street artists Zbiok and Invader
- A signature mix of reporting and essays on street art, urban design, photography in public space, street art and the Internet, and city reports on the artistic scenes of Lisbon and Łódź
- All the content in the Magazine is available exclusively offline
- Printed on a mix of beautiful offset and glossy papers
- 164 pages, 2964 copies, each stamped and signed
From protest art to anti-surveillance art, in this issue, we bring engaging reviews on art in the public space, exploring how urban art shapes societies and cityscapes. As Magdalena Abakanowicz once pointed out: Art does not solve problems but makes us aware of their existence. It opens our eyes to see and our brain to imagine. Contemporary art, similarly to philosophy, constantly asks us questions, which are often inconvenient, annoying or occur at an unexpected time and place. It draws us into a conversation, but on its own terms. The most sensitive and at the same time most brutal place in this respect, is the ’street’. It is in this place that artists express their views in the most direct way and communicate with passers-by. We ask what is the public space today, we discuss the relations between street art and the net, and present how artists engage directly in current political events, supporting protests, manifestations or simply discussing the shape of the surrounding reality.
Contemporary Lynx Magazine is the ultimate foreigner’s guide to contemporary art, design
HOW WE MADE OUR HAND-PAINTED COVER
Contemporary Lynx invited street artist Sławek ZBIOK Czajkowski to participate in a project unlike any other before — to hand paint 2,964 magazine covers, which will comprise the fifth print issue of our magazine. At the TRAFO Centre for Contemporary Art in Szczecin, ZBIOK transformed rows of blank white PVC sheets into striking works of colour. Every sheet is part of a larger collective image — a 16 x 11-metre painting titled, ‘The World Is A Mess’, depicting a luminous sea harbour clad in glaring shades of lime green, azure and cobalt blue. In this way, every magazine cover is its own work of art, an inimitable mark and trace left by the artist himself, unlike the ‘reproduction’ covers that are seen in the traditional format of printing and publishing.
The title ‘The World Is A Mess’ is a quote from one of Donald Trump’s speeches, someone who is clearing the way for a dark wave of conservatism, nationalism, racism and the sinister cult of force to sweep in. — explains the artist Zbiok, adding” I’m interested in the idea of privilege, and the resulting ease of judging others in the context of economics, skin colour, sexual orientation, or place of birth.

International distribution is one of the biggest challenges for our team. International circulation is a costly process. On the forefront of Contemporary Lynx Magazine’s team are the artists and our readers, and we trust that your support will help us to increase our circulation and popularise information about Polish contemporary art.
Contemporary Lynx is a grass-roots initiative run on pure enthusiasm, hard work and stubbornness, with a small measure of frustration with the lack of sufficient information on – and opportunity for — Polish artists to reach out to an international audience. We want to give a voice to Polish artists and build a platform for experts to report on them. Your help is vital in making this happen!
RISKS & CHALLENGES
Contemporary Lynx Magazine is published biannually, in April and October, since 2015. The biggest challenge for us is the cost of print and fees for the writers, translators, designers we managed to cover every issue. The costs are high because we only use the highest quality papers, pay a fair share to our contributors, and focus on delivering the best quality content. We will never compromise on these, because this is precisely what makes us an important (and beautiful) source of information about what’s best in Polish art. This is also why we could use your help!
One of the most challenging tasks in running an indie magazine, is the cost and logistics of a worldwide distribution. At the same time, the possibility of reaching out to new readers from across the globe is the most exciting part of publishing a print magazine. However, the cost of shipping, logistics and transportation sometimes threaten to overwhelm our budget and restrict us from crossing the oceans and going further. Your donation will be directed towards helping us cover these costs related to international distribution.
For us, it is crucial to reach readers and Polish communities spread across the globe. We believe that talented Polish artists deserve international exposure, and Contemporary Lynx is a unique place to showcase their work to an English-speaking audience.
