Lublin: ‘3256 trees’ – exhibition
May 30 - June 30
Ludomir Franczak, Aleksandra Skrabek
The exhibition raises the problem of the coexistence of a man and nature in the urban space and mutual influence of these two forces. The title of the exhibition, ‘3256 trees’, refers to the number of positive decisions regarding tree logging issued in Lublin in the last year. This overwhelming number shows that despite the fact that people depend on the environment, the latter is more often being degraded than treated with care. In the period preceding the exhibition, Ludomir Franczak created a map that includes all the places of tree logging, and then made a specific pilgrimage to each of them. The exhibition is constructed by combining and building upon various materials: documentation of activities undertaken in Lublin and private archive of Ludomir Franczak and Aleksandra Skrabek. A palimpsest of materials referring to nature and colonisation of human practice is created as a result of artistic action.
An integral part of the project is publication – the translation of ‘Walking’, an essay by Henry David Thoreau (Polish translation by Juliusz Pielichowski).
