Marseille: Valdas Ozarinskas

December 2, 2020 - January 10, 2021

AN ARCHITECT WITHOUT ARCHITECTURE?

A RETROSPECTIVE OF VALDAS OZARINSKAS

Kolektiv Cité Radieuse, the newly opened third space devoted to modern architecture and its implications at Le Corbusier Housing Unit in Marseille, inaugurates its exhibitions program with a retrospective of the work of Lithuanian architect Valdas Ozarinskas (1961-2014).

Specially designed for Kolektiv Cité Radieuse by Vilnius Contemporary Art Center (CAC), the exhibition Architect without architecture presents the multifaceted work of a true maverick of the European architecture scene. Co-author of a pavilion for Expo Hannover, of private houses and public facilities, Valdas Ozarinskas also dealt with exhibition design, scenography, (video) installations, performances and happening, notably as part of the Private Ideology Collective. An embodiment of the opportunities and ideological void left by the collapse of the Soviet Union, he shifted from the late soviet underground to the one of the new capitalist order, driven by a radical approach that only occasionally found a context to deliver its full potential, as during his work for CAC, a pioneering institution in the Baltic landscape.

An icon of the 1990-2000s and a reminiscence of the early 20th century avant-gardes, this outstanding architect also personifies the complex relationship of many architects to their own art and their refusal of the standardized norms, boundaries and aesthetics strictly enforced by the profession, the State or the free market.

Curator: Virginija Januškevičiūtė (CAC Vilnius)

Design: Audrius Bučas

Presented at Galerie Kolektiv Cité Radieuse by CAC Vilnius, with the support of Valdas Ozarinskas Foundation and the Lithuanian Cultural Institute
