Växjö: Agata Nowosielska

September 2, 2016 - October 23, 2016

Agata Nowosielska

HELIG PLATS (Holy Place)

Agata Nowosielska

Växjö Konsthall will be showing the first ever exhibition in Scandinavia by Agata Nowosielska (b. 1982). She lives and works in Gdansk, Poland. Nowosielska’s painting can be seen as historical contemporary painting. It intelligently combines technical know-how and composition with current issues to build an intricate whole. It is genuine contemporary painting in which the contents are directly united with the execution.

It is important for Nowosielska that her paintings reflect the time in which she is living. In her painting she has depicted Poland’s transformation over the latest decades as well as the individual’s condition in comparison to collective change. The exhibition at Växjö Konsthall to a very high degree touches upon current changes in Poland and Europe which have happened in just the past year.

The exhibition is simultaneously part of her ongoing work in which she gathers inspiration from the Baroque, which in itself can be seen as a symbol for extravagance and the artificial. The religious message had to be packaged for the masses. It is a kind of cosmesis similar to today’s capitalism in which how an object appears at the market is much more important than the product itself.

Nowosielska in this way belongs to a European tradition along with artists such as Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer and Jonathan Meese, having an attitude toward painting which is unusual in a Swedish context.

Many thanks to Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
