Opening Up! Autumn-winter programme of artistic projects at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art.

In the open call announced in the summer 2024 by the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, titled Opening Up! the organiser asked for propositions of small-format projects: events, presentations, film screenings, minor exhibitions, educational, discursive, performative, and transdisciplinary projects. Out of 734 applications, 36 autonomous projects from artists and collectives were selected.

From Funerals to Afrofuturism: A Diverse Cultural Experience

In October and early November at U-jazdowski, one could plan one’s own funeral; read a choreographers’ periodical and perform it together; watch a documentary about how a group of Lebanese teenagers take over the architectural icon of modernism; learn what Afrofuturism is and how it can be useful to us. Until mid-December, you will still be able to: take part in workshops on cooperatives; immerse yourself in soundscapes, watch experimental films and talk about the future of video art; get to know the works of Polish artists working with fabric, explore the park around the castle in search of sculptures that house animals. And much more.

Open call formula

This diversity of voices, artistic practices, media, and topics is intentional. In the middle of the year – as a result of staff changes – it turned out that the institution does not have a programme for autumn and winter. What has always distinguished the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle has been its openness to experimentation and dialogue with artists and the audience. This is why for two decades it has been running a residency programme for artists and curators, and for over a decade it has been providing a space for young artists, the Project Room. Many editions of both programmes were preceded by an open call for projects and authors. This formula flattens hierarchies, allows us to notice peripheral phenomena, but also to orient ourselves in what is happening in the mainstream. In joint work, it brings together curators and artists. Therefore, in the face of uncertainty about the programme at U-jazdowski, the open call formula was resorted to again. U-jazdowski has once again opened up to new proposals and ideas, inviting artists to co-create the programme. Through joint activities, the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art asks questions about the future of art, creating a space for the exchange of ideas and research into new solutions.
