Stance or Distance?
Among the artists: Zbigniew Libera
10 October–6 December 2015
Contemporary Art Museum

Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto is pleased to present the exhibition “STANCE or DISTANCE? –Connecting Myself to the World.”
“Distance” is not visible to the eye, yet it exists and is felt everyday as we come into contact with the various people and things that surround us. The way in which we measure and perceive distance is deeply related to the environment we grew up in, our rapidly changing contemporary society, and existing historical backgrounds and systems. It is precisely because of this distance or sense of distance that we are able to formulate our own attitude and stance and further establish a connection with the world.
This exhibition approaches the various relationships of “distance” that connect us and the world through the presentation of robot and media works, painting, photography, and films by 17 groups of researchers and artists from six different countries. Comprised through sections of “self,” “other,” “world,” and “nature,” the exhibits serve to transform the “distance” that connects spectators with the world. The exhibition attempts to build a new relationship between the viewer and the world, which increases or diminishes in scope according our experiences and ways of thinking.
