March 24, 2016 - June 5, 2016

Ubu Król, Warsaw

Exhibition by Franciszka & Stefan Themerson at Camden Art Centre in London

24 March – 5 June 2016

Franciszka and Stefan Themerson were life-long collaborators from when they met in 1929. Working in experimental film and animation, concrete poetry, satirical drawing and comic strips their work dealt with ethics, language, freedom, conformism, dignity and the human condition. Combining an innovative use of photograms, photography and photo-collage techniques, they were pioneers of the Polish cinematic avant-garde and played a major role in the history of independent, experimental and pre-war cinema in Poland. In 1948 they founded the Gaberbocchus Press, which over the next 30 years published more than sixty titles, including works by Alfred Jarry, Kurt Schwitters and Bertrand Russell, almost all of which were designed and illustrated by Franciszka. The Themersons themselves created books including philosophical novels, children’s books, concrete poetry, essays and a libretto and music for an opera.
