‘I IS SOMEBODY ELSE’
As a part of Home of Metal, Centrala is delighted to present a two-part exhibition.
The first solo show in the UK of Polish artist Przemek Branas. In “I Is Somebody Else”, the artist will create an installation employing the motif of the mask. Branas is inspired by impersonation strongly present in heavy metal culture but also the alternative culture that developed under the communist regime and State controlled music scene.
In his works, he challenges the viewer. In the observable, he hides an essence. As an artist, he doesn’t identify himself with any categorisation. Branas is well known as a story-teller. His practice is often triggered by small found objects, such as photo discarded in the trash or some private artefact.
The second, archival part of the exhibition will show the experience of Polish fans participating in the underground music scene in the 1970s and ‘80s. This exhibition will focus on personal stories of how fans “Behind the Iron Curtain” created an alternative culture influenced by Western music with a series of zines, letters, memorabilia and interviews.
The Exhibition will be accompanied by a publication and a series of events.
