DUTCH DESIGN WEEK: GRIDS – DESIGN HIDDEN BEHIND THE BARS
This exhibition presents the debut project of Falbanka – a duo of young Polish designers.
GRIDS is a collection of window textiles. Their design was derived from metal window bars commonly appearing in Polish urban space, in a multitude of shapes and colours. The project was one of the finalists of the MakeMe! competition at Lodz Design Festival 2014 and received excellent reviews. Since then GRIDS has been traveling around the world (New York, Reykjavik, Helsinki) and was mentioned in magazines including ID, 2+3d, and ICON.
Izabela Sroka and Julia Cybis, the two halfs of Falbanka, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In their projects they try to combine tradition with modernity by blending diverse (and often surprising) aspects of local identity into their designs. Their meticulous attention to detail and quality motivated the decision to produce all the fabrics in Lodz – a Polish city renowned for its textile industry traditions ever since the beginning of the nineteenth century.
