The issue that we wish to investigate and present in this series of screening is a new tendency emerging in polish contemporary art. In recent years some of the visual artists are entering the field of cinematography, yet without opting out the context and source of their work.
One could say, they have turned their interest into a seemingly passed form of classic narrative. This involved a medium that traditionally was considered as opposite to modern art – the cinematographic movie.
Still named a “new media”, video art has already become one of the typical media in contemporary art. To realise their concepts, those artists chose to move to a position of filmmakers with a large number of consequences and new possibilities.
Their approach to filmmaking is highly influenced by the artistic tradition and background, while the technique they use has very little to do with individually created video art. The crew, the plan, synopsis, all the professional filmmaking approach is involved in their work, as well as quite large funds if compared to other individual artistic works. In the field of visual arts we are also very used to exact authorship of the work. In case of the artists’ movies this comes more as a question of collective work.
The troubling fact is that they still remain in the position of artists, not directors, which shifts the point of view at this kind of artworks, as well as the field of their circulation. Their work, show both in the cinema and gallery spaces, remains in those two contexts, marking a new “no man’s land” at the same time. This project researches different aspects of this situation, and presents artists working with the film – not video – medium in the contemporary polish art.
