– syrinx
syr·inx | \ ˈsir-iŋ(k)s \
1. Ornithology. the vocal organ of birds, situated at or near the bifurcation of the trachea into the bronchi.
2. (initial capital letter) Classical Mythology. a mountain nymph of Arcadia who was transformed, in order to protect her chastity from Pan, into the reed from which Pan then made the panpipe.
Six live performative acts creating non-anthropocentric temporal narratives and new systems of communication. Voice treated as a vibratory phenomenon belonging to human/non-human beings and non-living matter, rather than solely a tool for human-governed expression.
The voice of a syrinx is pure vibration, matter in motion. Enabling some bird species to produce more than one sound at a time, Syrinx welcomes multiplicity of voices. Together with invited artists and viewers we explore the penetrative and affective potentialities of embodied and disembodied voice; a collective sonic entity. Experimenting with sound and image on the periphery of organic and synthetic and synthesising eclectic forms of sound expression, the performances incorporate technology in expansion of our relationship to the material and the bodily. Like the water reeds Greek nymph Syrinx was transformed into, emitting haunting sounds with every blow of the wind, Syrinx is a space of refuge, a self-contained environment for sonic experiments.
