The Piotrkowskie Biennale of Art is a nationwide competition for visual artists, which aim is to review and present contemporary artistic creations in various techniques, confront the artists using different media, and popularise the most interesting current phenomena in the field of visual arts. In addition to the diversity of media and art techniques, the distinguishing feature of this competition is the topic put forward by the Superintendent, characterising the subsequent editions of the competition. It allows you to get to know a wide spectrum of ways of interpreting the subject as well as mutual relations between painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, video art or installation. In the competition, apart from certified artists, there may also be artists who do not have an art school-leaving certificate.
The inspiration of this year’s edition of the competition is “What, how and why to offer the world? In tribute to Andrei Tarkovsky” – a message contained in the filmmaking of the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, and especially in his last film titled “Sacrifice”. The film, along with autobiographical themes, contains an answer to the question “what to do to save the spirituality of the modern world?” Directed not only to cinema artists, but to all conscious recipients. To quote Krzysztof Jurecki, the chairman of the Biennale jury: “When we recall the cinema of Tarkowski, we expect artists to express themselves in a variety of art forms about what is and what can be “sacrificing”. We do not just assume a religious interpretation on the assumption that every “true” work of art can be a timeless, transcendental idea showing the way of artistic and spiritual development at the same time, aimed at trying to understand the world, but certainly not re-ignoring it, so let’s try to give something from each other selflessly, give the world just a fraction of what we have … “
374 artists applied for the competition presenting 906 works. The jury qualified 65 works of 58 artists for the second stage and the competition exhibition. The results will be announced during the opening of the Biennale on June 28 at 19.00 in the Gallery of the Center for Artistic Activities ( ODA ) (5 Dąbrowskiego St., Piotrków Trybunalski).
