Sokolovsko: Contexts 2014
July 25, 2014 - July 29, 2014
Contexts 2014 – The 4th International Sokolovsko Festival of Ephemeral Art
25 – 29.07.2014, Sokołowsko, Poland
The 4th International Sokolovsko Festival of Ephemeral Art will take place from July 25th to 29th, 2014. The festival provides a platform for presenting ephemeral art in its various manifestations: performances, installations, sound pieces and multimedia works. We focus on delivering an artistic message to local community through realizing works in public space, naturally accessible to the inhabitants of Sokolovsko, organize workshops for children and adults. The festival also features documentation of art projects and art places. The debate in which artists, critics and art theoreticians will participate focuses on the theme of space in which art takes place: inner space of an artist, art museums and galleries, public space. Art can be approached as a phenomenon which does not require classification; at the same time you can look at it from different points of view in order to gain a wider perspective. You can say: art happens everywhere, but you can also say: art happens in spaces named private, inner space of an artist, galleries and art museums, public space. Magdalena Ujma will moderate the discussion.
Each edition of CONTEXTS honours a distinguished Polish artist. In the past they were Jan Świdziński, Zbigniew Warpechowski and Jerzy Bereś. This time it is Zygmunt Rytka. The oeuvre of this neo-avantgarde artist is concerned with investigations of the medium of photography with a conceptual edge to it, as well as documentary photography. “The Continuity of Infinity” and “Temporary Objects” are among the most recognized cycles of his works.
Among installations featured in the festival is Maria Pinińska-Bereś “An Observation Point of Changes in Art” reconstructed by Bettina Bereś and Jerzy Hanusek. After “Forcing the Miracle” of 2013 Joanna Rajkowska will present her new installation, this time in the architecture of the Foundation premises. Multimedia installations by Peter Shelton, Joanna Krzysztoń and Grzegorz Rogala will be on view in various locations.
Sound pieces, installations, interventions will be introduced by PROJEKT KR 736EJ – Bus-Studio of Piotr Lutyński, whose origins go back to the tradition of travelling theatre, cinema, music combined with Kurt Schwitters’ Merz Bau. The bus will interact with the audience leading them to the realm of utopia. Wojciech Bąkowski’s work representing the most interesting young generation pursuits will be future in sound module of the festival.
This edition initiates cooperation with Performance Art Bergen. A group of Norwegian performance artists including Rita Marhaug, Robert Alda, Benedicte Clementsen, Teresa Longua will present their work in Sokolovsko, and in August a group of Polish artists will take part in the festival “Between the Sea and the Sky” in Herdla (Norway). It is the first stage of a long-term project.
Another international collaboration is curated by Boris Nieslony who recommended for CONTEXTS a group of German artists, supported by Stiftung fur Deutsch-Polnische Zusammenarbeit. Portuguese artists are a constant element of our festival thanks to the support of Portuguese Embassy and Camoes Institute.
The festival presents big projects realized in public space, this year it is “Army” by Akademia Ruchu and “Still Charge” by Łódź Kaliska.
