Monika Sosnowska “Gate”
Maison Hermès
The impressively scaled sculpture and installation of Monika Sosnowska transforms existing architectural forms, drawing upon the artist’s own encounter with architecture as a symbol of power in the age of socialism and the subsequent destruction of its public buildings. Having lost their utopian meaning and become disfunctional, these structures are brought to ruin then metamorphasized into new forms, while Sosnowska draws upon the fragments of architectural detail to form unique sculptures. In her first solo exhibition in Japan she features new work based on the house gate, the symbol of a boundary between the city and the home. Here solid steel structures are bent and warped into fantastical shapes, removing them from their principle function and yet retaining their strength of presence, pointing to the strength of life beyond anxiety and destruction.
