We cordially invite you to Gallery Apteka Sztuki in Warsaw for the opening of Veronica Taussig’s exhibition Przekroczenia/Crossing. This is the artist’s fifth individual exhibition, following shows in Prague and Berlin, at the City Art Gallery in Łódź, and at the Erarta Museum in Saint Petersburg.
The series of sculptures presented at the Warsaw gallery Apteka Sztuki speak of crossing the boundary between mass and vacuum, positive and negative, colour and noncolour, of merging media but also breaking through the traditional method of perception.
Works employing the contrast between black and white were chosen for the exhibition, although the artist is known for her sympathy for Mondrianian reds, blues and yellows. But the colouristic rigour enables a focus on the mutual interaction of the structures, the conflict of shapes. The artist interestingly impacts the senses with white and black planes, sometimes of identical shapes. The forms cross and encroach on each other, one appearing and another disappearing into space.
Veronica Taussig manoeuvres exclusively within a world of abstraction. Her works sometimes appear to be a fleeting record of a moment, a splash of light on the wall, an afterimage emerging with a blink of the eye. Other times they become a fragment of architecture. The artist operates with planes gliding in space, seemingly suspended there on black, nearly invisible structural frames. Here there are many perpendiculars of wavering balance, towers defying the laws of gravity, atectonic constructions and visual puns.
Veronica Taussig was born in 1948 in Romania, and for years has lived and worked in Vienna. Professionally she practised interior design. She was close to art her whole life, interested in it, and collected works of contemporary artists, but she began to create art herself only in retirement. Her immediate inspiration was her contact with the late works of Matisse. She now devotes every spare moment to her own projects. The exhibition at Apteka Sztuki is the artist’s fifth individual show, following shows in Prague, Berlin, Łódź and Saint Petersburg.
