About Contemporary Lynx Magazine: Issue 3

For our third print issue, we explore the aesthetics of Eastern Europe during the 90s, and how the pop culture and art of the decade continues to be referenced within contemporary life.

Signalling the beginning of a newfound period of capitalist freedom and an open art market, the 90s were a precarious period of transformation in the Polish cultural scene as artists fought to break away from the confines of censorship without compromising their artistic integrity. But the 90s have not left the thoughts of contemporary artists working today. What is it about the decade that continues to be so attractive?

Contemporary Lynx Magazine aims to map and highlight innovative Polish work in contemporary art. In this issue, you will come across articles exploring the magnetism of the decade (interviews with artist Marzena Nowak), why contemporary artists are so fond of the aesthetics of Eastern and Central Europe in the 90s (Marinalla Padernil), the techno and disco music that dominated the illicit rave scene of the era (Sound Lab), and the urban architecture and success of Silesian design (BlockLove).

This is only a fragment of what is on offer in 134 pages of thought-provoking content, complemented by stunning visuals made exclusively for us — portraits by Michał Korta, collages by Mateusz Szczypiński and, last but not least, a bold and impressive cover designed by Maurycy Gomulicki.

Join us on this nostalgic journey, as our international team of writers and contributors aim to address why this specific period of transformation, which took place twenty-five years ago, continues to captivate the contemporary imagination.
