Ii In Finland
Where Local Community Meets International Art Professionals
The Art Ii Biennial (AIB) is organised in Ii – a rural area of northern Finland, since 2008. This year edition of the biennial entitled “The State of Matter” took place between 4–10 June and was structured around the theme and images of water. Water is a fundamental element for all forms of life also water is a central element in Ii, because here the River Iijoki flows into the Gulf of Bothnia.
For the first time, the concept of the water was expanded by the technological dimension thanks to a collaboration with the WRO Art Centre – a cultural institution based in Wrocław focused on the presentation of phenomena in the field of contemporary art, new media and technological experiment. The scope of this event broadened towards culture-nature-technology research. The installations created by Paweł Janicki, Jacek Zachodny, WROcenter group, were presented together with a screening programme WRO on Tour #20 Substance Shift.
In each edition of the Art Ii Biennial (AIB), an essential aspect is an interaction between the local community and the international arts professionals through various community activities. The site-specific art is located primarily at the Environmental Art Park and the village centre. Temporal, local and cultural conditions affect the production of these pieces of art. One of the main values of the event is ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability.
