Selection Of 7 Fully-founded Art Residencies March 2023

Spring is coming, and fresh opportunities for artists and art curators come with it. If you want to take the next step into your career and allow your ideas to germinate, get familiar with new offers of art residencies. We also found one programme dedicated to artists, researchers and culture professionals from countries in war.

OPEN CALL. THE ART OF BEING GOOD (ESTONIA)

From September 4 to October 29, 2023 Tallinn Art Hall and Goethe-Institut Estland will host a residency in Tallinn for an artist living in Germany. The aim of this residency program is to spur artistic research and discourse on the topics of ecological awareness, environmental sustainability and the ethics of making art.

Who can apply:

  • The applicants must mainly work and live in Germany.

Application deadline: 5 March 2023.

Support:

  • On-site accommodation and studio (studio-apartment)
  • Travel expenses from and to Germany (slow travel with rail and bus)
  • Scholarship allowance of 300 Euros per week (incl. taxes)
  • Costs of materials with a maximum amount of 350 Euros (incl. VAT)
  • Networking opportunities, including studio visits and meetings with professionals
  • Opportunity to present an artistic project created in the context of the residency

KORDON LAB ON FOOD AND ENERGY (ESTONIA)

The grounds and the context of the residency, situated on the Unesco biosphere reserve amidst the Baltic Sea on Hiiumaa island in Estonia, forms a starting point for further engagement between the residents’ artistic practices, the locality and its inhabitants.

SUMMER/AUTUMN 2023

3 weeks from August 7.08. – 27.08.2023
or
3 weeks from September 4.09. – 24.09.2023

First residency period is characterised by research and mapping which takes place in late summer/early autumn 2023 – a time of abundance and the possibility of harvesting.

WINTER/SPRING 2024

2-4 weeks between January 15.01. – 11.02.2024
or
2-4 weeks between February 12.02. – 10.03.2024

Who can apply:

  • KORDON invites artists-in-residence from the Nordic and Baltic region to widen the understanding of food in relation to energy.

Application deadline: 8 March 2023.

Support:

  • Each resident will receive a one time artist fee of 3000€, production grant up to 2000€, per diems up to 900€. 
  • Slow travelling costs (by land and sea) up to 275€ per round trip.
  • Free accommodation in the newly reconstructed residency house (including a separate bed- and bathroom). There is a shared kitchen for cooking and culinary experiments, a greenhouse, garden, beehives and a sea-container serving as a project space. 
  • Contact to various workshops on the island can be made (wood, ceramics, glass etc).

RISING: CLIMATE IN CRISIS RESIDENCIES (USA)

Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to face the severity of the climate crisis and be agents of change to guide our collective understanding, response, and vision as we shape our shared future. 

Residencies are 6 weeks and will take place between September 2023 and May 2024. Flexibility in your dates is appreciated as we try to accommodate everyone’s schedules. You may come over six consecutive weeks or come twice for three-week sessions.

Who can apply:

  • Local, national, and international visual, musician/composing, performance, literary, new media, and interdisciplinary artists are eligible to apply.
  • Both established and emerging artists may apply, but a dedicated practice and demonstrated commitment to public engagement are expected.
  • Artists of colour are encouraged to apply and we are particularly interested in receiving applications from Indigenous artists. 
  • Students enrolled in degree-seeking programs are not eligible. 
  • Collaborative teams of up to two artists can be in residence, please see our FAQ for more information on how to apply as a collaborative team.

Support:

  • Recipients will be provided $3000 as a stipend and $2000 towards materials. 
  • They support each residency with an evaluator/ally, liberatory land orientation, two photography sessions, and an interview with a videographer. 
  • They additionally fund optional field trips such as boat rides and eco/history tours. Depending on the needs of the project, they may be able to assist artists in accessing Tulane University faculty consultants or research collections. 
  • Full room and board including food, utilities for living, and studio space to selected residents.

S+T+ARTS PRIZE 2023 PRIORITIES (AUSTRIA)

S+T+ARTS is an initiative of the European Commission to foster alliances of technology and artistic practice. As part of this initiative, the S+T+ARTS Prize awards the most pioneering collaborations and results in the field of creativity and innovation at the crossings of science and technology with the arts. The S+T+ARTS Prize of the European Commission is launched by Ars Electronica and the consortium partners Bozar, Waag, INOVA+, T6 Ecosystems, French Tech Grande Provence and Frankfurter Buchmesse.

What can apply:

  • Artists/creative professionals or the researchers/companies involved from throughout the world; S+T+ARTS is not limited to citizens of EU-member states.

Application deadline: 13 March 2023.

Support: 

  • Two prizes, each with €20,000 prize money, are offered to honor innovative projects at the intersection of science, technology and the arts: The emphasis of both prizes lies on the creative appropriation and employment of technologies as well as the search for unique constellations of collaboration from the S+T+ARTS fields.

NORA ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY PROGRAM FOR REFUGEES (FRANCE)

The programme is aiming at artists, researchers and culture professionals from countries in war, who have recently received a refugee status in France. Taking part in the NORA programme helped them to connect with various professional structures working with poetry and visual arts and gave them time to concentrate on their artistic projects. Some of them managed to publish their first book, others were able to continue to create, make exhibitions, films etc.

The goal is to develop projects within French Heritage Sites for Culture (Centres culturels de rencontre), with the support of their team, and consequently getting a practical knowledge of French cultural, artistic and intellectual networks and building long-term connections and partnerships. 

Who can apply:

  • The programme is aiming at artists, researchers and culture professionals from countries in war, who have recently received a refugee status in France.

Application deadline: 31 March 2023.

Support:

  • 1200€ per month and the refunding of their travel fees (up to a determined level according to the distance to the residency centre). 
  • Residents are staying free of charge, within the Centre that has accepted them. 
  • Whenever possible, the Centre puts at their disposal material necessary for their residency project. The period of residency can vary from 1 to 6 months.

2023 ODYSSÉE ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY PROGRAMME (FRANCE)

The programme is aiming at artists, researchers and culture professionals from countries other than France wanting to develop projects within French Cultural Centres – Historic Monuments.

Who can apply:

  • It is aiming at artists, researchers and culture professionals coming from all countries other than France.
  • Thay highly encourage feminine applications.

Application deadline: 31 March 2023.

Support: 

  • 1200€ per month and the refunding of their travel fees (up to a determined level depending on the distance from their country to the CCR). 
  • Residents are staying free of charge, within the Centre that has accepted them. 
  • Some Centres offers restauration on the spot, others reimburse restauration fees within a certain limit). 
  • Whenever possible, the Centre puts at their disposal material necessary for their residency project. The period of residency can vary between 1 and 6 months.

PINA BAUSCH FELLOWSHIP FOR DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY 2023 (GERMANY)

In 2023, the Pina Bausch Fellowship supports a wide range of cooperation formats: the fellowships can be realised on site with the cooperating partners, but can also take place virtually or hybrid.

Applications should be based on realistic evaluations of their implementation. Applicants apply with a self-selected cooperating partner whose artistic work they are interested in or with whom they would like to work. The fellowship aims at enabling further artistic and personal development of the applicants.

The 2023 fellowships must take place between September 1, 2023 and August 31, 2024. Artists can apply for a full-time fellowship (21 hours or more per week) or a part-time format (20 hours or less per week) in 2023.

Who can apply:

  • All artists from the field of dance and choreography with at least 2 years of professional experience and/or with a formal degree – all dance forms are welcome!
  • There are no age restrictions.

Application deadline: 15 April 2023.

Support:

  • The monthly allowance is 2,500 € for a full-time fellowship or 1,000 € for part-time fellowships.
