Monika Sosnowska (b. 1972) is a Polish artist whose sculptural practice explores architecture, urban transformation and the impact of space on how people live and feel. Her solo exhibition Weight of Matter spans the Main Gallery and two floors of South London Gallery’s Fire Station. The works reflect on the legacy of modernism, the transformation of urban space and the relationship between architecture and social change.
Many of Sosnowska’s sculptures appear to be caught in states of collapse or stripped of their original function, challenging our expectations of how architectural structures should look and behave. Curated by Margot Heller, SLG Director, the London exhibition brings together recent and earlier works, including sculptures and models that reveal the artist’s process of transforming functional architectural forms into objects that are often difficult to identify and impossible to use as originally intended.
At the Main Gallery, Sosnowska has created a site-specific installation bringing together a group of large-scale sculptures suspended from the building’s rafters. The works hang above the gallery floor like fragments of a collapsed structure, creating a new spatial environment that contrasts with the architecture of the historic gallery. At the Fire Station, the artist similarly responds to the building itself, introducing works that enter into dialogue with its existing architectural features.
