Artists: Jan Brykczyński, Michał Łuczak, Rafał Milach & Karolina Gembara, Adam Pańczuk, Agnieszka Rayss, with a guest appearance of Peter Puklus
At the exhibition entitled ‘Geometry of Imagination’, premiering at Gdańsk City Gallery, six artists of the Sputnik Photos collective, with a guest apprearance by Hungarian photographer Peter Puklus, once again experiment, creatively confronting common formats of expression, presenting an extended field of photography as a medium transcending the usual frames of a picture. Behind the show lies a fascination with a multi-faceted tradition of Polish avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s, accompanied with a manifesto specially written for the occasion by Tomasz Szerszeń.
The name Sputnik Photos since 2006 has come to mean an international group of photographers fascinated with documenting physical and mental landscapes of Central and Eastern Europe in the post-transformation era. In their projects they often transcend territorial and visual borders, creating a new artistic quality on the basis of personal experiences and experiments.
The artists forming the Sputnik Photos collective are winners of many awards and prizes, including World Press Photo and Pictures of the Year. They are also engaged in extensive educational activities, among others in the form of a mentoring programme, based on which they are going to organize a two-day photo workshop in Gdańsk City Gallery.
