Andy Warhol Photographs At The Fotografiska New York Photostory

Fotografiska New York invites viewers to see the world through Warhol’s lens and take a look at the people who made up the world around him. This exhibition will go live on https://www.fotografiska.com/nyc/andy-warhol on June 29th, 2020.

In Ladies and Gentlemen, Black and Latinx models and drag queens bravely stepped in front of Warhol’s camera and into the international spotlight. Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender activist and self-identified drag queen, was photographed as part of this series. Her image will be highlighted on the exhibition website in its own section to celebrate her important work as an activist. The Sex Parts and Torsos series features closely cropped images of nude male and female body parts from above and below the belt. The Polaroids in this series blur the line between art and pornography for their explicit nature and stark presentation of intimate body parts.

Jim Hedges, founder of Hedges Projects, considers these two series as an integral portion of Warhol’s career. “Simply stated, without the camera, there would be no other Warhol works,” says Hedges. “Warhol used a camera every day of his life to record his activities and friends as well as for part of the creative process. While the Polaroid portraits are recognized as the most iconic of Warhol’s photo-based works, it is undeniable that the unique silver gelatin prints Warhol took between 1976 and 1987 feature a personal view of the artist’s life and sensibilities that is not found elsewhere.”
