11 upcoming art events not to miss. What to Expect from the Autumn Art Calendar.

Autumn will be filled with exciting international art fairs and events for all the artists, art lovers, and collectors. We have compiled a list of noteworthy events. Both the well-established ones, attended by hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors. And the emerging ones, building their brand up and attracting new audiences. Here is a chronological list of 11 upcoming art events not to miss:

Prague Art Week

September 5–8, 2024, Prague, Czech Republic 

The autumn art season will kick off with the third edition of the art festival in Prague, which aims to showcase the best art galleries and museums in the city. The opening will take place at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art and will be highlighted by an exhibition by renowned Czech painter Josef Bolf. This year’s festival programme features over 100 events, including exhibitions in more than 30 gallery and non-gallery spaces, presenting various contemporary art forms, from painting exhibitions to sculptural realisations in public spaces, and live performances.

Hotel Warszawa Art Fair 

September 7–8, 2024, Warsaw, Poland

The beginning of September will also be marked by a unique art fair at the Hotel Warszawa, which is part of the unconventional concept of presenting artworks in hotel spaces known from the shows in New York or Los Angeles. One floor of the hotel will be opened to 30 Polish and foreign galleries to create individual and collective shows in the suites. The hotel alone is a true architectural gem of Warsaw, contributing to the event’s attractiveness.

September 12–15, 2024, Vienna, Austria

Austria’s most important art fair, the International Art Fair in Vienna, will take place in mid-September at Messe Wien in Halle D. The event focuses primarily on emerging contemporary art from Central and Eastern Europe. This year’s VCT STATEMENT programme explores the theme of Energy as one of the crucial issues of our time, aiming to stimulate discussion on sustainability through art. The section on emerging artists, ZONE1, curated by Bruno Mokross, will include artists with links to Austria and explore the impact of Vienna’s living conditions on the art created there. New to the fair is the CONTEXT section, curated by Pernilla Holmes. It will focus on nine artists from the late 20th century, including artists well-known in Austria yet previously overlooked internationally despite their profound contribution to art.

Vienna Design Week 

September 20–29, 2024, Vienna, Austria

When attending Vienna’s Art Fair, consider extending your stay to take part in Austria’s largest design festival. The 18th edition of Vienna Design Week focuses on the interdisciplinary role of design in society. Each year features design in Vienna’s public, often unconventional spaces. This year, the Landstraße district takes its turn. The programme also includes various formats, such as RE:FORM, focusing on sustainability, or FOCUS, exploring the theme of TRASH.

Warsaw Gallery Weekend

September 26–29, Warsaw, Poland

The last days of September will see the 14th edition of the largest festival of contemporary art in Central and Eastern Europe – Warsaw Gallery Weekend. 35 Polish and 2 international galleries from Budapest and Bratislava will show their works focused on contemporary issues such as post-humanism or feminism. Although the main art fair will last only four days, there is also a rich programme of accompanying events, taking place until the end of November.

ArtVilnius

October 4–6, 2024, Vilnius, Lithuania

October will begin with the 15th edition of one of the most important art events in the Baltic region, the ArtVilnius Contemporary Art Fair,  traditionally held at the Lithuanian Exhibition and Congress Centre Litexpo. This year’s fair focuses on Northern Europe and will feature the work of 67 contemporary art galleries and 15 art institutions from 14 countries. The programme also includes Project Zone, a presentation of the most renowned art institutions and curatorial projects curated by Valentinas Klimašauskas, a curator and writer; and The Path, an annual exhibition of sculpture, performance and installation curated by Maria Arusoo, a curator and director of the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art.

Asia NOW 

October 17–20, 2024, Paris, France

This year marks the 10th edition of the Asian Art Fair organised at the Monnaie de Paris. Founded in 2015, the fair aims to showcase the diversity of the Asian contemporary art scene by presenting the unique, thriving landscape of Global Asias in Paris.

Art Basel Paris 

October 18–20, 2024, Paris, France

One of the most important and renowned art fairs, Paris Art Basel, will take place in Paris on the same weekend as Asia NOW. This year’s edition will be held for the first time in the renovated Grand Palais, where 194 galleries from 42 countries and territories will present their projects. This year’s exhibitions are divided into three sectors: the Galleries – presenting modern and contemporary art by established artists, Emergence – showcasing young and emerging artists, and the newest sector Premise – featuring nine galleries with singular curatorial projects.

Contemporary Istanbul

October 24–27, 2024, Istanbul, Turkey

October will conclude with the 19th edition of the Istanbul Art Fair, the largest art fair in the region. Launched in 2006, it aims to support contemporary art and creative industries locally and internationally and draw on the region’s culture, while fostering new ideas and concepts.

Artissima 

November 1–3, 2024, Turin, Italy

The 31st edition of Artissima in Turin, the leading Italian contemporary art fair, will take place at the Oval Lingotto. This edition, directed for the third time by Luigi Fassi, will be entitled The Era of Daydreaming and will focus on the act of daydreaming as a manifestation of our thoughts and their creative potential. 189 Italian and international galleries will participate in the fair, including 66 monographic projects.

Abu Dhabi Art Fair 

November 20–24, 2024, Abu Dhabi, UAE

The final event of the season, The Abu Dhabi Art Fair, will be organised at Manarat Al Saadiyat. It is the culmination of a year-long programme of Abu Dhabi Art, which includes contemporary art installations, exhibitions, talks, and events. The fair brings together local and international galleries, presenting works for sale and exhibition projects. It also consists of various sections, including the main Gateway exhibition of local and international artists and the Beyond Emerging Artists section – an initiative for young artists to realise their projects.
