FOCUS – section at viennacontemporary

This year’s Focus section is curated by Tevž Logar and will revolve around the question: “What is the understanding of a state that is not based on territory but in time?” Based on the phenomenon “NSK State in Time“, the curator questions the notion that art is represented in the realm of a nation-state.

Vienna Design Week

Vienna Design Week is Austria‘s largest curated design festival and has been taking place in Vienna since 2007. This year a guest country is Finland and the 9th district as their Focus District, home of the largest festival centre so far! The honour belongs to the Althan Quartier, the crystalline building known as Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof although it in fact bridges the station.

Vienna Hummanities Festival 

The fourth Vienna Humanities Festival is yet another urban salon with leading figures from the worlds of academia, art, and culture. In nearly 40 events, held over several days primarily on Karlsplatz, they negotiate the burning questions of our time.

Neuer Kunstverein Wien

The Neue Kunstverein Wien shows the Polish artist Agnieszka Polska in the exhibition “The Burrow”. The exhibition includes a sound installation that is an adaptation of Polska’s latest film “The Happiest Thought”, produced on behalf of the Berliner Festspiele / Immersion and in cooperation with the Hamburg Planetarium, as well as the films The New Sun, 2017 and My Little Planet, 2016.

Curated by – The gallery festival with international curators in Vienna.

Since its foundation eleven years ago, this festival has evolved into a central contemporary art event that – supported by selected galleries based in Vienna – has become an international calling card for the city. The main theme of this year is the “Circulation” of money, global commodity economy, circulating data, signs, images and discourses, the circulation of cultural capital. Part of the festival are guided tours. Why not to join the one curated by Janina Falkner (Galerie Steinek, Galerie Meyer Kainer, Galerie Hubert Winter, Krinzinger Projekte, Galerie Raum mit Licht).

Maurizio Cattelan at the Theseus Temple

The Theseus Temple, this year presents a single work by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. A flock of pigeons is perched high up on the decorative cornice of an empty room. Sitting alone or in small groups, they appear to observe the visitors below, sharing their bemusement at the situation everyone finds themselves in. After some time, we realize that they are not in
fact alive.
