Conversations with the Reflection (2023) turns art into a beacon of psychological states through a site-responsive methodology, where the unpredictability of atmospheric intensity is subjected to rigorous planning, technical orchestration, and the construction of a painstakingly determined spatial event. Kaiyuan Yang’s photography crystallises a long, complex, and controlled process in which performance, cinematic staging, theatrical scenography, and the computational technologies governing drone trajectories come together. The still image corresponds to the aftermath of a conceptual equation based on environmental chance, uncertainty management, precision engineering, and an assemblage of visual metaphors.
A cold, sombre, and polar-inspired landscape on a winter day is not only chosen through close weather monitoring, but also replaces the fabrication of a studio-based scene, thereby generating the kind of symbolic resonance that only performative practice within a real natural environment can deliver. The auratic afterimage oozes magnetism and diffuses perceptual ambiguity in a centripetal manner, culminating at the centre of the picture, where the human figure is presented as both self and mirror-image. This is where the existential dimension of Conversations with the Reflection lives; where the visual device of reflection functions as a signifier of inner-state turbulence, self-questioning, and ultimately as an assertion of individuality over the contrivances imposed by social norms and expectations. It is also here that Yang’s metaphorical lexicon becomes utterly personal, as he is both actor and director and explores performance to analyse and question his own psychic terrain.
In Yang’s practice, the generation of the sign through time-based photographic technique shows that the temporal dimension matters as much as the material one. Duality, in his documentary stills, is manifested not only allegorically, but also in the pursuit of interior consciousness through external choreography; the mobilisation of both formal and conceptual devices; the introduction of algorithmic exactness as a means to convey human fragility and fluidity; and the use of long exposure to inscribe motion into two-dimensional image forms. Yang’s art simultaneously collapses multiple moments into a single frame with data-driven precision and harmonises contending forces through a rigorously premeditated directorial practice. In doing so, it allows us to visualise — and thereby gain awareness of — those dormant or repressed affective processes integral to self-discovery.
At the crossroads between technological advancement and the human condition, his practice also critically analyses the impact of artificial intelligence on a historically complex and increasingly globalised social structure. Yang is not only interested in cinematically constructing landscapes to generate psychological reflection, but also in speculating, from a post-digital visual culture perspective, on the future of mankind in relation to contemporary dystopian realities addressed in certain strands of post-humanist thought, and the gradual erosion of subjectivity resulting from techno-capitalism. Judging by Yang’s production, machine, digital, and computational systems are transformative in terms of artistic progress, yet they also restructure our existential condition in a destructive way, leading towards civilisational collapse.
