Phil joins us at W1 Radio with a sound rooted in the raw spirit of early UK techno and a healthy disregard for keeping the genres in their own little boxes.
The UK producer behind Other and I.M.A.G.E. Recordings has previously released as Rutes and Secret Mystery School, with records on Third Ear Recordings, Macadam Mambo and Wrong Island Communications. His roots run through London’s Lost parties in the 90s, with Steve Bicknell, Max Duley and Grain among his formative influences. Expect techno with a tribal, funky groove and plenty of hip movement.
Launched in 2023, I.M.A.G.E. stands for In Motion: Abstract Grooves & Electronica. It’s a UK techno label built for the way adventurous DJs actually play: house, disco and techno rubbing shoulders, with tracks made to blend across the electronic spectrum. Good luck getting that lot to sit neatly in one record-shop section.
With Other and I.M.A.G.E., Phil does the whole thing himself: music, artwork and video production. Complete creative independence, right down to the visuals. Presumably the tea-making falls to him too.
During our W1 Radio interview, we got into the state of London’s club scene, the difficulties of running a label, and a question that can keep a studio session going well past bedtime: what matters more, inspiration or putting the hours into your technical craft? Plenty to chew over, especially when you’re the one making the tunes and keeping the label moving.
