Art Residencies You Need to Apply in August 2024. See the list of art residency programs for artists and curators.

August will eventually slip away but here are a few OPEN CALLS’ deadlines you can’t miss. Do you want to demonstrate your creativity and knowledge? See the list of art residency programs for artists and curators that can help develop your craft and career. 

>> SAWA SAWA 2025 (FRANCE)

This program is destined for Palestinian artists of all disciplines (visual arts, performing arts, music, writing, and cinema) residing in Jerusalem or the West Bank or originally from Gaza and living abroad, to enable them to maintain a creative activity. In particular, it seeks to promote the diversity of Palestinian artists’ profiles, whether emerging or established, with an emphasis on the diversity of social and geographical contexts. SAWA SAWA offers a large number of about 33 diverse residency modules conducted by the French Institute of Jerusalem’s partners. 

Exhibition curators are also welcome to apply.

Application deadline: 20 August 2024

Support:

  • Travel expenses for the laureate (round trip ticket to France + internal transportation in Palestine and France + travel insurance + visa fees), 
  • A living allowance of 1,000 € per month,
  • Accommodation and workspace provided by the partner during the residency period,
  • Accompanying expenses and/or production grant for a total amount of 2,500 €.

>> TaDA Textile and Desing Alliance Artist in Residence Program 2025 (SWITZERLAND)

For many years labeled and limited only to the “craft” term, finally, textile art has received artistic consideration. TaDA – Textile and Design Alliance is a cultural promotion program of the cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, and Thurgau. The program aims to promote and strengthen, within the artistic discussion, the regional identity of Eastern Swiss textile and design culture. Therefore, the residency is aimed at artists and creatives working in the field of design, textile design, architecture, art, literature, performing arts, or interdisciplinary projects, who have a strong interest in textile production and its context. The residents would have an opportunity to do practical and artistic work and carry out applied research.

Application deadline: 2 September 2024

Support:

  • Coverage of travel costs,
  • Contribution to living expenses (CHF 2000 per month),
  • Apartment in Arbon (private room, shared use of kitchen and bathroom), few minutes walking distance from the workplace and Lake Constance,
  • Workspace in the former textile and engine factory Saurer AG,
  • Professional advice and exchange with 13 partner companies and organizations, selective use of their knowledge technology and infrastructure,
  • Individual professional support by textile designer Martin Leuthold, the TaDA team, and external experts if needed.

>> Residency open call for artists based in Central Africa (ENGLAND)

It is a perfect opportunity for contemporary visual artists who have not had the opportunity to work in London before. The open call is for an artist based in Central Africa (Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tomé and Principe), who has already presented their work in several venues. The eleven-week, fully funded residency will take place at Gasworks Additionally, this residency is supported by Mercedes Vilardell – the chair of Tate’s African Acquisitions Committee and member of the African Acquisitions Committee at the Centre Pompidou.

Take into account that the residency is subject to successful approval of visa application!

Application deadline: 27 August 2024

Support:

  • All visa costs and support with the visa application process
  • A weekly stipend of £150 to cover living expenses in London,
  • A materials budget of up to £800,
  • Economy return flights and taxi transfers from the artist’s home country to London, including one cabin and one hold luggage,
  • Single-room accommodation in Gasworks’ Residency House, shared with other artists,
  • 24-hour access to a fully accessible private studio at Gasworks, alongside other resident artists, and a community of London-based studio holders,
  • A prepaid travel card (TFL zones 1+2) for unlimited travel within central London throughout the residency,
  • An Open Studio event and presentation introducing the work and research developed during the residency,
  • Access to Gasworks’ basic tools and AV equipment, depending on the availability,
  • A dedicated residency page on Gasworks’ website, including short video interview introducing the artist’s work, filmed and edited by Gasworks during the residency,
  • Networking opportunities and at least two individual studio visits with other artists, curators and arts professionals,
  • Administrative, pastoral, and curatorial support from Gasworks’ staff

>> Theatre in Palm (ITALY)

Theatre in Palm is the program that hosts a series of residencies for emerging artists revolving around performing arts and theatre. TiP seeks not only actors but they are also looking for directors, choreographers, scriptwriters, costume and sound designers, and many, many more individuals passionate about performing arts who are eager to gain new professional competencies. The main purpose of the residencies is to foster collaboration, spark inspiration and create shared insights and experiences while building meaningful and life-changing connections in the European network. Each residency has chosen a theme it will be working with. The Italian module will be focused on general equality and environmental sustainability.

Support:

  • 1300€, including accommodation, per diem, travel, insurance and fees.

What about creating art and conducting research in the evergreen Danish Mols Bjerge National Park? Earthwise Residency is focused on an interdisciplinary approach, especially; in the field of science and art relationship. Moreover, they put a strong emphasis on sustainability. If you are two collaborating working partners: one artist and one researcher keen on exploring more-than-human topics or willing to investigate the theme of multispecies relations this open call is definitely for you. 

Application deadline: 3rd autumn edition 15 August 2024,
4th spring edition to be announced

Support:

  • A stipend of 4.700 € for each of the two persons,
  • Coverage of parts of the travel costs,
  • A small budget for materials,
  • Accommodation in private rooms in a house shared with Earthwise volunteers,
  • Working space.

>> The Arab Documentary Photography Program (Lebanon)

This unique open call has been dedicated to supporting unconventional, compelling, non-stereotypical visual documentation of social issues and narratives relevant to the Arab region. This grant is open for independent photographers from, living and working in the Arab region, irrespective of ethnicity, gender, or religion. ADPP grantees will benefit from mentorship provided by distinguished program mentors and will be required to attend three specialized workshops (two in-person and one virtual). The grant may be used to begin a new project or to complete work on an existing project. What’s more, ADPP accompanies the Alumni Fellowship. The program was launched by The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (Lebanon) and the Prince Claus Fund (the Netherlands) in partnership with the Magnum Foundation (USA). 

Application deadline: 12 September 2024

Support:

  • The $7.000 production grant is to be used to cover the artist fees, any needed production equipment cost, any research costs, travel, and other expenses related to the production,
  • The grant covers per diem (when on location) associated with the attendance of the three workshops,
  • Access to translations will be provided throughout the program.

>> Subscena 2025 OPEN CALL (Croatia)

The call is aimed at emerging performance groups and artists who aspire to overcome geographical, national, religious, gender and ethnic qualifications in their national or international collaborations and productions. The main goal of the Subscena is to provide an environment for independent, underground artists. By providing collaboration and presentation space for residents and visiting artists the program encourages an active, non-profit but sustainable, subversive public insight, with a view to art that is experimental in practice, disobedient, personal and stimulating.

Application deadline: 20 August 2024

Support:

  • The accommodation for artists in residency,
  • Travel expenses up to 200 € per artist and up to 500 € per group,
  • Technical education,
  • Promotion.
