Born in Belgrade in 1983, Vladimir Lalić is a multidisciplinary artist focused on the complexities of modern human existence. His work spans a vast spectrum: from drawing, printmaking, and collage and in the last 5 years, sculpture and large-scale multi-media installations, often incorporating sound and his own voice. His art challenges viewers to confront themselves and society. Lalić is an artist who refuses to be confined. His work is a vital invitation to confront the chaos of existence and find meaning in the beautiful, unsettling deformation of reality.
Lalić’s artistic practice is deeply shaped by his formative years in war-torn Yugoslavia, giving rise to complex worlds where desire, vulnerability, and absurdity intertwine. At the heart of his work lies an existential inquiry into the fate of humanity — an exploration of transformation, contradiction, and the fragile balance between persistence and self-destruction. In his art, the organic and the artificial collide, and the grotesque reveals its own strange beauty. Through layered materials such as resin, ceramics, metal, plexiglass, and paper, he constructs luminous ecosystems that question the instability of identity and the tension between creation and decay.
Inside the Theatre of Absurdity
Lalić’s imagery often decontextualises and distorts human and animal forms, creating hybrid beings that reflect the psychological and social complexities of existence. His art becomes a mirror for our collective search for meaning, belonging, and connection. Rooted in a profound fascination with the body, mortality, and psychological intensity, his works peel back the physical and emotional layers of humanity, exposing both its fragility and raw vitality.
Rejecting the idea of a fixed aesthetic, Lalić pursues an ever-evolving visual language, believing that style should serve expression, not confine it. His works move between humour and unease, revealing how progress often mirrors obsession and desire becomes its own undoing. Drawing is central to his process – a private dialogue where control meets chaos and the grotesque turns intimate. Rejecting fixed forms, he embraces constant change as the truest expression of being.
Ultimately, his work invites viewers into a space of ambiguity and intensity, where honesty, brutality, and beauty coexist, revealing the profound psychological turmoil at the core of what it means to be human.
Beyond the visual arts, Lalić is also the founder and singer of the band Organized Chaos. Trained as a tenor at the Music School “Stanković”, he performed globally with the choir Viva Vox in numerous cities, including in New York for the United Nations and at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Organised Chaos is a project blending progressive rock with a wide range of musical genres, offering its listeners a fresh and innovative perspective on experimental music. His passion for both art and music enables him to create visual and musical art forms that influence one another. Rhythm, layering, and structured improvisation of his music mirror the compositional tension and movement found in his drawings and installations.
Lalić started his education at the University of the Arts in Belgrade, earning a BA from the Faculty of Applied Arts, where he also worked as a TA for the Department of Graphic Art. He completed his MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2024. His subsequent career quickly gained global recognition. Lalić has mounted 32 solo exhibitions and participated in over 70 group shows, establishing his presence in major international art hubs including New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Trieste, and Belgrade. He did a three-month residency at the esteemed Cité internationale des arts in Paris (2013) and the “Tropical Lab” residency in Singapore (2019). Furthermore, the artist is the recipient of six awards for visual arts, most notably the prestigious Prix Paul Louis Weller from the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Curators’ Choice Award at Gallery 46 in London, and the Special Prize at LYNX Art in Trieste.
In October 2025, his sculpture, commissioned with the support of the Arts Council England and the National Lottery, was unveiled in London, UK. As a part of a project by Art Voyage Biennial, To Move, is to Bloom, curated by Tima Jam celebrates movement, renewal, and belonging. Rising from the lake in Manor House Gardens in the form of imaginary hybrid insects whose heads gradually bloom into flowers. The work reflects Lalić’s own experience of displacement, portraying migration as a natural cycle of fragility and rebirth.
